Bailey on walks: He is scared of vehicles, but is getting used them. He has a lot of uncontrollable energy at the beginning of a walk but after about 25 mins, settles down into a manageable trot and responds to leash training. It's good that he has the other dogs to model his walk on right now. He will be ready to go jogging with his owner soon enough! He gets distracted and very excited when he meets new people and new dogs and wants to greet and play with them. He will always pee or poo outside so house-training him will be easy.

Ava is staying with us for 3 weeks. This is how I walk with Ava. She has a tendancy to pull on the leash heavily, so this makes the walk more manageable, especially when I am also with 2 other dogs and a toddler!

Hands-free dog walking is a revelation for me as a dog owner who has always walked her dogs twice a day or more. However this can only be achieved once your dog is well leash-trained and knows what to expect on a walk with you.

The occasional jerk on the leash is still required but for the most part I find it more relaxing than holding one leash or more depending on the amount of dogs I'm walking.

I have also prescribed hands-free walking for some people who have strong dogs but also have to team the dog walk with another activity, such as pushing a stroller.

There was one case of a lady who was suffering terribly with her dogs. They would yank and pull on the leash which was hooked over her wrist/arm while she pushed the stroller. So I showed her a technique to tie her dogs leashes to a belt/bumbag around her waist. This way when the dogs pulled, they no longer caused damage to her wrist/arm but pulled on the weight of her body which didn't give way so easily. She was also able to reach down quickly with her free hand and give the leashes a jerk to correct any distracted behaviour. She was very grateful for this technique....and as any mum knows it's not easy to train your dogs when you have a young child around. Now she can enjoy walking her dogs several times a day while taking care of her little one.

Another example of a good use of hands-free walking is when you go jogging. Personally, I find it difficult to relax into a jog when my dogs get distracted and pull even just a little on the leash in my hand. But by tying their leash around my waist, they have no choice but to follow me as the weight of my body and my constant forward direction is pretty strong and overrides any distracted behaviour they might have. My dogs will follow me dutifully and we will all be satisfied after a jog around the block.

There are several tools out there that can enhance your hands-free walking experience. It really depends on how well your dog walks and how much control you want over them during the walk.

Personally I use a splitter for my 2 dogs which lengthens their usual leash. So it's easy for me to tie the whole leash around my wait and let the splitter do it's job.

But there are another couple of options out there. Here are some made by PPark. If you would like to buy these products please let me know. The first 2 are multi-purpose leashes.

The 3rd is available in short and long lengths which allows you to wrap the long length around your waist.

In conclusion, hands-free dog-walking can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience if you have trained your dogs and use the correct tools.

Goodbye Toby

Toby was my first rescue and saw me through some tough times. He never bit me, and was very easy to take care of. Such a cute little guy even after he chewed through my upright fan cable and the inside of my printer. Towards the end he got a bad infection and it didn't get better even though he was on antibiotics twice a day. He was put to sleep on Wednesday night. Rest in peace my little friend.

So I took these photos of a husky. He lives four doors down from the Cambridge Vet Centre. Dr Zhen knows about this dog as it has been in to have it's fur shaved. He advised the owner of the skin problems the dog has and the fact that it is dangerously thin, but the owner didn't like it very much and accused Dr Zhen of giving his dog sickness and diarrhea after it had only been in to have it's coat shaved. Dr Zhen is wary of taking it any further as the man is a neighbour and seems to be of an unpleasant attitude. Can anyone give me some information about what to do? I would like to take this further, press charges if necessary, but I would like some support and I don't have the knowledge.

Found him near the new Wenshin PArk. He was standing in the road, looking lost, and he came over to say hello. No microchip, healthy, pure beagle.....wonderful temperament. Will get him fixed and then release him. What a shame.....so friendly, and he has a collar so he must have been someone's. It will take a week to heal and get the stitches taken out.

CingShuei Dog Sanctuary

Yesterday I went to visit a dog sanctuary. It is run by the Taichung Universal Animal Protection Association ( TUAPA ) and Love Dog which are the affiliated foreign-run team. It is about a 40 mins drive out of Taichung, deep into the country. You pass fields of red soil, Taichung Airport, concete walls with razor wire ( army bases) and a large amount of the roads were under construction and basically dirt track for the moment. I went with a concerned group of students from Dong HAi, who visit the sanctuary about 3 times a semester. It's a good thing too because the place is pretty difficult to find by yourself. The CingShuei sanctuary is home to over 1,300 rescued dogs. There are 6 buildings where the dogs are segregated into puppies, sick, aggressive, etc The building are divided into cells which vary in size and can hold 6-8 dogs. For the most part the dogs are wary but when cornered friendly. Our job was to medicate 2 buildings with tick/flea spray. Actually it was fun! We were separated into groups and we were armed with various chemicals then we were told where and how to spray and massage in the lotions by a tall Taiwaese guy called Lao Shi. And so it began! Someone would open a door and then eveyone would filter through trying not to let the dogs escape. Then we would catch and spray and massge all the dogs. The really scared/nervous ones would be sprayed from afar. When all the dogs in each cell were done, we would move on. Most of the dogs seemed happy and healthy. Of course there were a couple of sick/scarred/crippled ones, and in the case of one dog - with a nose missing! there were a couple of obvious rubber band cases, around the muzzle and neck, but they were being looked after by the band of weekend volunteeers, and the few paid workers that stay there during the week. Funding comes from donations and events. None of the dogs are killed here. They all have a permanent home until they are old and die. The idea is to keep expanding and building new buildings to accomodate new animals. There is also a place for cats there, and a veterinarian on site. It is really quite clean, and there were no obvious infestations. A lot of the dogs are desperate for attention and love, and are ready to submit to having their belly rubbed as soon as you walk in. Others are very nervous and aggressive if cornered. Before I went I wasn't sure what kind of experience this would be. I was prepared for depressing and sad. In fact, I came away mostly amazed. I can't deny that it's a shame that so many beautiful animals are in there and that they desperately need good homes, but they are certainly in a better position than the homes they were in before, or on the street. I will definately return to see those hopeful faces again.

Herman's home

So as Caroline is getting married in July in Canada, she has decided to take Herman there with her as there is a loving home ready and waiting for him there. It has been very difficult securing a ticket home for this little chap as the travel agent really didn't know what he was doing. After 3 weeks of fussing around, and different quotes, we went for a different opinion and instead of 32,000nt (!) we were told that as he will be travelling as our baggage, his ticket would just be 6,000nt ( yay! ) It really makes a difference which airlines you fly with. Eva and China Airlines are best for pets, as they are cheap and don't stop in Hong Kong; and so long as there is a passenger willing to travel with the pet, it is just counted as extra baggage. We are thrilled, and Herman now has a real chance of finding a good home!

Beautiful Britney. A rescued labrador puppy. She got rehomed at the Chili cookoff 2 weeks ago. The new adopters seemed really happy with her, but called a week later to say they can't keep her because they have developed a serious skin allergy. They have kept her for another week, but she will be returned to us this Saturday. Poor girl!

Meet Maggie! She was rescued this weekend by Derek. She was heavily pregnant and when I went to see her yesterday I got more than I bargained for! She had already had her 9 puppies at 7.30 that morning! Maggie is a calm, gentle dog who has been owned before. Needless to say we are now looking for homes for all 9 puppies and for Maggie.

This is Herman, and we think he is 16 week old German Shepherd Cross. We found him wandering around at the Gongyi dog park well after everybody had left one Sunday. If we we had left him there he would have been picked up by the dog-catcher and taken to a pound where he would only have 7 days to live before being killed. Our friend Laura offered to take him home and he is being fostered by her at the moment. He has had his first two sets of vaccinations, and does have an umbilical hernia that will need to be fixed at the time of his neuter, but that is not a huge issue! He is lovely dog and loves to go for rides on the scooter. He is still a little nervous with fast actions and new people! Fearful not aggressive. He is a great jogging partner -- running right by your side. We would be thrilled if we could find him a home, as we want him to have the opportunity to bond with someone when he is still young. by Honey

So Myrtle got rehomed on Friday night thanks to the help of Auntie JoAnne. She found a wonderful family from the Nantun area who said that they wanted to spend the whole weekend with her before Monday so that she won't be alone and so they can take care of her emotionally. They had a dog previously which died of old age and the 2 daughters seemed very responsible too. They said we can pop in and see Myrtle anytime. we are all very happy and relieved that all the puppies have been rehomed. We called Cindy's family on Saturday and they have renamed her "Little pretty" and don't seem to be having any problems. Myrtle was crying and not used to her new place but that's only to be expected I think. So finally the protective barriers around our home can be taken down ( to prevent wire chewing and other types of destruction ) ! ... and all is quiet. by Honey

nearly a happy ending

Cindy went to a family in Taiping last Sunday and we have already foned them twice to check on how they're all doing. Everybody seems to be doing well! Tonight, we thought Myrtle had been rehomed by a lovely family on Xitun road right near Caroline's school. We already knew the family fairly well as they own a scooter shop and Caroline had known them for over a year. Unfortunately, they hadn't even had her for 3 hours when they phoned us and asked us to take her back because she was crying. This seemed a bit lame, and when we saw them they said that even though she hadn't barked yet they were worried that she would bark at night time and wake the neighbours. Such a shame, they were very nice, but they obviously hadn't thought things through very well. It was quiet here for a while and now Myrtle the Destroyer is back! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has helped us in the continuing search for new homes, and to Michael who looks after them when they are a bit too much for us to handle. Pearl came to us in October last year and the puppies came 2 weeks later. For 4 months the puppies have been a source of joy and stress for all of us. We will keep an eye on them and hope that they will continue to be loved and cared for by their new homes.....the search for Myrtle's new home continues. by Honey

We would like to say thankyou to Kelly in Taipei who has put Myrtle and Cindy on a Taiwanese animal rehoming website. We hope that this will facilitate in the safe rehoming of our girls. We have been taking Myrtle to the Gongyi dog park every Sunday for 2 months now with no luck, and even though the regularity of the event provides a good opportunity for them to be rehomed, it is an arduous and draining task. We see the same dogs there every week, tied to posts who are desperate for good homes. We see the crates of puppies brought in every week to be given away free to anyone who walks by on the street. Recently the business just hasn't been good. Even the really cute small puppies aren't being taken. Even if they do get taken you have to be careful exactly what kind of home they are going to - Cindy's case is an obvious example. At least on the websites people can take their time and browse, educating themselves about the responsibility they are thinking of taking on.

So up until today for the last 6 months or so Honey has had a morning run in the park...and when I say run, I mean run! she runs like a crazy dog and explores. Sometimes I don't see her for a few minutes at a time and then she comes racing back. It has also been a great place to get my puppies used to open spaces and meeting other dogs. More recently I have been meeting other dog owners from the area who walk their dogs at the same time and it's nice to see a familiar face or two. Sometimes breakfast or tea is brought and shared, and the dogs play or fight and run around. This is the highlight of Honey's day and I'm not sure what's going to happen now. Two policemen came up to us this morning and took photos as they politely told us that we couldn't run our dogs in the park anymore. I'm really bummed about it. It has become such an enjoyable part of H's day, walking the pavements on a leash just won't cut it....but unfortunately it will have to. It seems so unfair! All those big wide open unused spaces in the park just perfect for an energetic dog (and owners) to gallop around and socialise. It has also provided a forum where children adn families who don't have dogs can meet them and hold them, especially at the weekends. I have found that many mothers and children love to stop and hold my puppies or touch Honey or take her for a walk on her leash. There really isn't anywhere else to go that's near. All the main parks dog-free zones....and I understand that some people don't want dogs because of their mess, but shouldn't that mean that pooper scooping should be enforced not the banning of dogs? Especially in parks like this that are big enough for everybody...I mean really! there is space for everyone in these parks. It really feels like I have a right as a dog owner to be able to run my dog everyday and give her the exercise and freedom that she needs, especially as most dog owners that I know have to keep their pets in apartment blocks for the most part. This is such a shame, and it feels so unfair!

A wanderer has returned

So I got a call today from one of the new owners who took one of the puppies....our littlest girl. She said she was too busy to keep her and that she was sick and thin. So I managed to get our friend Stan to set up a meeting with the lady. We arrived at her house and she showed me the puppy. She is just a bag of bones.....my poor little girl. So thin, with ear infections and skin problems. Apparently the grandmother and grandfather didn't take well to the puppy and she cried if she was kept alone in her cage. She said that she fed her enough but when I got her home the first thing I did was feed her and she was starving! I've had to stop feeding her cos she'll make herself ill. Poor thing....she's so malnourished and underweight. She's also dehydrated and very, very cold. The heating pad is out for her. I'm glad the woman called me. There's no excuse for letting a dog get this thin, especially when it s obviously so hungry. Will take her to the vet tomorrow and get her looked over. Myrtle's happy to have her back anyway!

She is the last of Pearl's puppies and funnily enough was the first to come out. The first to open her eyes, grow teeth, venture out of the den...you get the picture. There were only 2 dark coloured puppies and one of them died in the first week. All the other puppies have been rehomed, and we will take her to Gongyi dog park on Sunday to see if we can find a loving home for her too. I will be so sorry to see her go. She's got so many of Pearl's physical characteristics, even down to her operatic whine, especially as she has started crate-training! She is a wonderfully destructive force and it is common for Caroline to come home and find a magazine shredded all over the floor or some kind of mess. Adorable isn't she? by Honey

Caroline took Pearl in to Dr Huang's to be put down on Friday night. We spent 2 days saying goodbye to her. Here are some things I remember about Pearl. She liked to walk on Caroline's left side behind us both. She liked to rub her face in tall grass. She loved green chew toys. She always came awake at a rattle of her harness, and pushed ahead of me to get dressed to go out. She would get jealous and push me out of the way to get onto Caroline's lap. She was a great mum, right up until her last day. She was a very relaxed, easy going dog. Nothing phased her or surprised her. She was always calm and composed. She will be greatly missed and now she is at peace.

Pearl....she spends most of her waking time scratching, itching, bleeding...of course she has moments where she enjoys food, or a walk...but aren't we just seeing the moments of good in her life in order to make ourselves feel better? The pig in Chung Ming Pet Shop

So, I went into a pet shop on Saturday and saw this pig. It didn't look very healthy and it's trotters couldn't get a grip on the metal bar flooring so it couldn't move from the middle of the cage as it just kept slipping back into the well created by it's weight. I got my Taiwanese friend to ask if they would move it to a cage that had a solid floor, and the boss said no because it had diarrhea. So I asked what they were feeding it, and the food they were using was dog food, I think pigs mainly eat fresh veggies and fruit. I met a friend at the Taichung Paws meeting on Sunday who reminded me of the pig. So I brought it up and we all went down there to have a look. We had a chat with the boss, who told us that the pig was 2000nt and yielded to our request of putting cardboard on the floor of the cage. We resolved to go back tonight ( Monday) and so we did. This time the boss told us that the pig was to be returned to the pig farmas it had been in the shop a month and hadn't sold. So it was a bad investment for him. He said he wouldn't be getting anymore pigs,as they're just not money makers, which is a good result I suppose. It's not the kindofpig that is eaten, so least the pig will go back to a breeding farm where it will get healthy and be fed the right food so it can be bred from. We came perilously close to buying the pig but I'm not sure this would have been the right solution as the pet shop owner may have just gotten another pig to take it's place. He is also selling Australian honey Gliders there, which apparently aren't illigal to sell, but are illegal to export out of Australia. These were probably bred here. They are difficult to look after though as they eat very specific foods and are very expensive. by Caroline

Our weekend

So, this weekend Pearl's spirits have definately lifted. Even though her skin looks terrible and she is obviously in pain, she started running in the park, and her appetite is back! She is a less lethargic, and is pushing for her share of affection again! Caroline has put a fleece jacket on her because she doesn't have much fur left, and of course she has a huge cone collar. On Saturday morning a lovely couple came and adopted one of our puppies. we were sorry to see her go, but she is going to a loving home. The new family aren't worried about her hereditary problems from Pearl, and Auntie Jo has given them some information and advice about it all. Hopefully we will be able to visit "Little Cow" ( niou niou )soon because she only lives 15 mins drive away. Unfortunately, our little girl puppy was also supposed to be leaving with a family this weekend but since they were informed about her health, they decided not to adopt her, which is a real shame. We are still waiting to hear about whether our other puppies will be successfully rehomed. by Honey

In light of Jean's contributions towards Pearl's costs, I have made a list of all the expenses that I have become aware of when fostering or adopting a pet. - laundry (for puppies or sick/incontinent animals) - accessories ( collars, harnesses, bedding etc ) - food - medications - toys - transport ( trains and coaches ) - sleep! (as your pet adjusts to it's new environment) It all adds up. I was completely oblivious to the costs of keeping Pearl for the first 2 months. Now the extra money I have spent on her is starting to show in my monthly budget, which is why we are so grateful to Jean for her ongoing support. by Caroline

I've been doing some research on demodectic mange. and here is what I've concluded so far. Firstly, the vets keep telling me that is hereditary, but apparently it isn't...it's the immune system dysfunction which is hereditary which makes the puppies susceptible to it. Second, all dogs have these mites, and only a few puppies should be susceptible to it....well all of mine have it. Third, puppies usually display symptoms after 4 months of age. Well mine were displaying localised symptoms before 6 weeks. Fourth, lesions usually appear on the face and head first. My puppies all have patches on their bodies, legs, elbows, bellies etc more.... 80% of cases in puppies should clear up by themselves. Will keep researching by Caroline

Bad news for Pearl

Since Pearl has come off her previous medication she has taken a turn for the worse. Caroline thinks that Dr. Julia was only treating her syptoms before, so her skin got better. But now we are trying to treat the actual problem, her skin's gone back to it's original state...and so quickly! It's only been 2 days and poor Pearl can't walk very fast anymore. Her skin hurts too much, and has become smelly again, like when we first got her. She has slowed right down. She is tearing up her skin which is oozing blood and pus. Her quality of life has gone right down, and it's difficult to watch. Where she was starting to play and run, she is now painfully walking. Where she was playing with me and her puppies, she is now biting and scratching at her body. Where she was eating alot of food, she is now showing less interest. It's a good thing the puppies enjoy eating solid food now (and they are eating alot!), because she can't feed them. Her belly and teats are too sore. Caroline will buy a big cone collar to stop her from biting herself today. by Honey

Pearl update

Poor Pearl! After her most recent skin flare up which happened a few days ago, Caroline took her to see Dr Huang down the road. She managed to find a dead demodex mite. They live deep in the hair follicle and are difficult to find. Pearl is on different medication now, and will have to receive more meds for months to come. At the moment she is very hot and I suspect she is runnung a fever. She is tearing her skin up because it is so itchy, scratching and biting, and I think caroline will put a big, cone collar on her today. Poor girl...she's worn her front teeth down through years of scratching her itches. Apparently getting her neutered will also help with the symptoms, as they are affected by her hormones (can't think why her previous owners didn't do this, she must have been a very sick puppy) Her skin is all lumpy, red and inflamed with an angry rash all over her body. What fur she does have is falling out....she looks a sorry sight. JoAnne, Caroline and I went shopping last night and bought her a special oil with omega 3 and omega 6 in it, made from salmon. Hopefully this will help her skin and immune system. Unfortunately demodex mange is hereditary so all the pups have it as well. Dr Huang has told me to feed them healthily and make them fat! The prospective adopters have been notified, and I hope they still want the puppies as 2 were supposed to be taken this weekend. What this will mean for the adopters is 2 years worth of meds for the new pups. Then if their immune system is ok (hopefully their dad was a big strong tu-go!) they should be fine until old age. But it is common to put dogs with demodex to sleep, and they definatly should not be bred from. Caroline has been very tired recently as the puppies are very mobile and noisy. They can be great fun, but we have to play puppy toilet land mine games all the time! by Honey

Overwhelming

So at the weekend I visited Kerryl's place in Taiping. There are 34 dogs there running around in comaparative comfort and security. The past 2 weekends I have done the rounds on Sunday at the Gongyi dog park to see who the regular faces are. After seeing Sean's place in Taipei which has 30+ dogs and these places, the amount of need overwhelms me. I see all these beautiful, happy dogs. Some of them have been injured, thrown away, abused. Some are missing limbs, but are still so vital and full of energy, and some are ill and need special attention. They are all relatively happy where they are in these shelters because they are safe and looked after. But conditions aren't perfect in either of these places, and these wonderful loving personalities all need good homes where they can be treated as special, and lots of affection. What will happen to these dogs? The shelters are full to bursting and they are in direct competition from all those cute pedigree puppies that are sold from pet shops everyday. There are so many more dogs on the streets waiting to be found and taken in, not to mention the pedigree pet shop pups which have grown too large, inconvenient or expensive for whoever bought them, waiting to be given or thrown away. What can be done to help the dogs already rescued?

Pearl update

I suspect that Caroline is seriously considering keeping Pearl. Some of you might say that you knew all along this would happen, but you know, up until today I was sure I'd have to say goodbye to Pearl soon. We need the space to help other dogs after all. Now I really think she might stay...(yay!) The reason being that she needs special care, not to mention that we've been getting quite friendly. Caroline came home and caught us sleeping on the same chair the other night! Last night she came up in a serious red rash. We suspected an allergy as it was so inflamed and itchy. So she went to see Julia today and Julia confirmed it. Pearl is one sickly dog. She is on a special diet to boost and support her flagging immune system, several medications for skin problems, and on top of it all is losing weight. I'm not sure that if she was rehomed anyone else could look after her so well and give her that kind of love and attention. Plus, we've been getting on really well and I'd miss her. We are real companions, and after all Caroline was saying a while ago that it wasn't fair that I was alone whilst she was at work...(hehe) by Honey

Now, back home when I was young, it seemed fairly straight-forward. Our dogs were all neutered end of story. There didn’t seem to be a choice.Recently though, I’ve felt bad about depriving an animal of their basic biological rights. This view was reinforced by a conversation I had with Liz in the park about her dog Mia. Liz hasn’t neutered Mia, in fear that it is basically cruel and will make her dog fatter.On the other hand JoAnne told me a story about an adopter of hers who recently lost a dog due to cancer of the un-neutered bits, and has sworn to neuter the next dog she gets.The way I see it, is this. Liz is sure that she can keep a close watch on Mia at all times, so that she can be sure she won’t mate with a male dog, which is great. She has taken the responsibility on herself for what happens to Mia.What I see is a proliferation of street animals and uncontrolled breeding. Nobody is taking responsibility for them.If Honey ever comes into season I will spey her. When Pearl finishes lactating I will spey her. Any animal I rescue and I have to put back out on the street I will get neutered (CNR/TNR) even though I still feel uncomfortable about it. Why?Honey and Pearl are my responsibility. Every morning they are let off the leash and run, sniff and wander where they like. They enjoy that as much as I enjoy watching them. It is my responsibility to give them a good fulfilling life. Which in my book means a bit of freedom as much as possible. There is the possibility that one day they may not come back until I have found them again, for whatever reason. If that happened, I wouldn’t what either one of them to get pregnant, as the consequences of that are also my responsibility.For any other animal that I rescue, I feel that I have a responsibility to reduce the amount of suffering on the streets; which includes reducing their numbers. Therefore, neutering is a theoretically good solution.Of course another solution would be to euthanase all the animals I rescue, but my God-complex doesn’t reach so far as to actually kill animals, just to operate on them. by Caroline

I’m throwing this one out there on the table, as I’ve had mixed reports back on this idea already. Is it safe to assume that foreigners who had pets growing up back home, miss their pets here in Taiwan? If it is, then isn’t it possible to assume that these foreigners are as yet, an untapped resource for foster homes for our rescued domestic animals in need of rehoming? They don’t need to worry about having to take their foster-pet back home with them, and there are no real commitment issues, apart from of course a bit of time and love. Of course all expenses would be paid for, as it is only our space that is limited. What do you think? by Caroline

Why Honey is on raw meat

I first heard about this about 3 weeks ago when Sean from Animals Taiwan came to Taichung to meet us. I was amazed when he mentioned it and when I probed him further I realised “why had I never considered this before?” After all the work I’ve done on educating myself on my own nutritional needs, history and general do’s and don’ts why have I never thought about what dogs would eat naturally? You see it on the TV programmes, wolves tearing up a kill, dingo’s, foxes and the like, I really began to wonder and it all seemed to make perfect sense. So I bought some raw chicken drumsticks for Honey to try and there isn’t any going back! Seeing how much she enjoyed it, and the changes it made to her poop and meal anticipation, I thought I’d do some research. It’s really not that easy to find information on the net about feeding raw meat to you pets. You have to delve and go from link to link to find the information you want. It’s all buried under a pile of commercial kibble advertisements. Anyhow I managed to research the basic biology of it all, which shows that a dog’s digestive system suits a carnivorous diet perfectly. This is due to it’s length (short), and the strong acids that are present to process the meat and bones. These acids are produced due to stimulation from chewing up raw meat slowly, rather than crunching up dry kibble. From my own experience I can say that Honey definitely enjoys mealtimes more now, as chewing on raw meat and bone has so many different textures and smells. She looks like she’s pacified eating, like a dog with a chew toy, and her poop is now chalky and blows away like sand in the wind given half a chance. She no longer sits very suddenly as if she has an itchy bottom (which I put down to her having full anal glands before), and she certainly seems just as fit and healthy s she was before....and Michael no longer complains about her dog breath. I can also say that it is cheaper to feed her on a raw diet as she uses the bits that people don’t want to buy. The chicken backs, necks, fish heads, pig bones etc. so they just get thrown away or given to me in large amounts. Up until 3 days ago Pearl showed no interest in raw food…fair enough, she’s still on kibble and tinned meat. But then she stole a chicken neck from Honey and yesterday ate 2 chicken backs. This makes me very happy, as I am convinced that with Pearl’s weak immune system (she has skin problems that won’t clear up) I need to reduce the amount of processed food going into her, and bolster her weak system with easy to digest, nutritious, simple food and supplements. So if she continues to show interest in raw food I will definitely stop offering her kibble. I also get a sense of pleasure when I see my puppies playing with a piece of raw meat. They are being weaned onto kibble in anticipation of them being adopted, but they have so much fun chewing and playing tug with the raw stuff. They look just like an animal documentary on wolves and their pups. It makes sense to me to look after myself and go back to what nature intended for our bodies. This means less stress and strain involved in everyday life, why shouldn’t I do the same for my beloved dogs? by Caroline

I met Pearl a 5 year old beagle cross, on the October 10th holiday at Fulong Beach. She looked really sick and she hardly had any fur. Her skin was raw and bleeding where she had been biting it in an effort to stop the violent itching. Two weeks later Caroline went back to Fulong and found Pearl. She put her in a travel box and brought her back to Taichung by coach.Pearl had an advanced case of cellulitis with mange, and was pregnant with 6 puppies!We took her to Julia our vet in Taichung, who checked her over. She had been microchipped before, so her owner was called. Unfortunately her owner didn't want her back as apparently she had "run away over a year ago". Pearl's been with us for about 2 months now and we've been through alot together. She is very loving and her favourite thing is to be cuddled on your lap. She would really suit a retired owner as her pace is quite slow. She's been on medication for 2 months now and her skin is much better, although it is still not perfect. We have 4 healthy puppies which are nearly ready to be rehomed. by Honey

Peanut is a blue Siamese fighting fish, and was also bought by a teacher at school. When the teacher left, it was down to the Chinese teacher to look after him. She tried her best but she was already very busy and was relieved when Caroline offered to take him and look after him at home.Now he has clean water, a clean bowl, new gravel and is fed every day. by Honey
